Senator Alfonso N. Diaz’s gaining a seat in the Senate of the Seventh Olbiil Era Kelulau is attributed to his persistence and unwavering belief that, “dissemination of information to the public is of the essence.” Popular for his radio personality, Senator Diaz hosts WWFM 89.5 “Talk Shows” and “Express Yourself” dealing with issues in the Government and communities and has garnered vast number of listeners throughout Palau. Senator Diaz returned to Palau after nearly twenty-four years with the United States Army, retiring as 1st Sergeant in the summer of 1991. While in the military, Senator Diaz specialized in tactical telecommunications. He served two tours of combat duty in Vietnam, three tours of duty in Korea and was later stationed in Japan, Germany, and throughout the United States besides his home base in Fort Gordon, Georgia. He earned two Oak Leaf Cluster - Vietnam Service Medals, two meritorious service medals, three army commendation medals, national defense medals and many others which amount to 16 medals total. He earned thirty-eight certificates of completion from various training offered in the military as well as undertook courses from Texas Community College and Big Bend Community College to further his education. In Palau, Senator Diaz became an entrepreneur, first establishing Diaz Enterprise that dealt with small scale grocery stores, laundromat, taxi services and restaurant. In 1996, he incorporated Diaz Broadcasting Company which consists of recording and radio station, WWFM 89.5. Two years thereafter, Senator Diaz took WWFM 89.5 to broadcast world wide broadcast through internet PalauRadio.com. He subsequently started another radio station, KDFM 98.5, easy listening with classical and jazz music. His father, Jose Diaz, is a Chamorro from Guam and his mother Ulang Ngirchorachel is from Koror. He was raised by his grandparents Yaeko Ngirchorachel and Ngirchorachel Ililau. Senator Diaz prides himself with his three children, Keola, Kelandy and Keana. The Senator enjoys fishing, involving himself in community functions and loves to sing and compose music. As a member of the Senate of the Seventh Olbiil Era Kelulau, he often reminds himself of his favorite saying, “politics is not science, rather it is an art of compromise.” Senator Diaz is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Resources, Commerce, Trade and Development (RCTD), Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education and Social Welfare (HESW), and member of the Senate Committees on Ways & Means and Financial Matters (WMFM), and Judiciary and Governmental Affairs and Foreign Relations (JGAFR).
